"Lightpaths" Will Inter-Connect Campuses, Researchers, Educators, Data and Computer Equipment at
Lightning Speeds

In November 2004, BCNET delivered a provincial government proposal, called BCNET 2010 to expand advanced, high-speed networks for research and education in BC. In March, 2005, the provincial government granted BCNET $3.15M to create a next generation network for research and education in the province.

2010 Network Expansion Plans
By 2010, BCNET plans to connect many BC campuses and institutions with high-speed gigabit connections and build new data exchange centers, called transit exchanges, in Surrey , Kelowna and Kamloops . These new transit exchanges will enable campuses in outlying BC communities to connect to a local exchange-greatly enhancing the network speed and bandwidth available to these communities. Outlying communities will now have access to world-class networking facilities, with the ability to connect to colleagues provincially, nationally and around the world.

"An expansion of ORAN would be good news for the entire Okanagan. The project would bring us closer to bridging the digital divide in this province and enable the medical community, businesses, educators and researchers to connect and share valuable information across BC and
around the world." Jim Hamilton, President, Okanagan College

"I wish to acknowledge the success of BCNET in the development of a communications infrastructure that supports advanced research in British Columbia's public post-secondary sector, as well as government and non-government research organizations provincially, nationally and globally" Arlene Paton, Assistant Deputy Minister of Education

Lightpaths
The expansion will build a next generation high-speed dedicated wavelength connection using lightpaths to all major research institutes including UBC, SFU, UVic, UNBC and BCIT. Traveling at the speed of light, this dedicated optical fibre will be able to transmit massive quantities of data and enable interconnection between such tools as scientific equipment, instruments, sensors and databases.

BCNET's High-speed Network Opens the Door to Research in the Okanagan
The development of the high-speed optical regional network in the Okanagan will support world-class research and education at regional institutions. UBC Okanagan will be the first facility connected to the ORAN . The network will pave the way for medical research by the Interior Health Authority. For health research, this means that patients' medical cases can be examined simultaneously between by ORAN connected sites. It will also boost the Okanagan's overall attractiveness by highlighting the region as a place where world-class research thrives.
