2008 BC Innovation Council Awards

BC Innovation Council is celebrating innovation excellence with its 2008 BC Innovation Council Awards Dinner. Held annually, the dinner honours exceptional innovators in BC who have made significant achievements in research, science communication and technology commercialization. These prestigious awards are given to individuals whose contributions positively impact quality of life in the province and internationally.

On March 17, 2008 BCNET will host an event to announce a significant upgrade to British Columbia's advanced network. Featured guest speaker, Honourable Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education will make the announcement and speak about the value of advanced network for research and education in BC.

The completion of the next generation advanced network highlights a successful partnership between BCNET and CANARIE to bring BC's researchers, educators and students the latest in next generation networking technologies.

The completion of the dedicated advanced network in BC provides an unprecedented bandwidth to meet the growing demands of collaboration, research and education for the next 10 years. Truly the most advanced network of its kind in Western Canada, the new next generation network now greatly improves the collaboration capability of BC's researchers, educators and students.

Organizations are invited to participate in this one-hour lunch information session about British Columbia’s super broadband research networks—10,000 times faster than the commercial Internet—and learn how Victoria organizations can interconnect with business, government, commercial Internet Service Providers, research and higher education institutes.

The seminar will provide an in-depth look at next generation networks in British Columbia and provide insight into an innovative data exchange centre, created to serve as a data hub for Victoria’s research and higher education community. Attendees will learn what this means for the Victoria district and explore the benefits of linking to this centrally located neutral “meet me place” referred to as the Victoria Transit Exchange. Information will be shared about the value of the Transit Exchange centre for community peering, exchanging zero-cost data, obtaining redundant and high speed connections to Internet service providers, and accessing a global network of researchers and educators.

Keynote Speaker: Michael Hrybyk, President & CEO, BCNET

Michael Hrybyk, President and CEO of BCNET, actively oversees and manages the operations of the society. Mr. Hrybyk has been an dynamic member of the technology community in the U.S. and Canada and has been recognized for his efforts in helping to develop the Canadian Internet. In 2003, he received a BC Information Technology Builder Award, and in 2002 was recognized by the University Presidents’ Council for his work creating advanced networks for BC's universities. In 1997, he was named as a builder of Canada's information society by CANARIE and Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.
