eduroam wireless roaming service is now available at 24 Canadian higher education campuses for easy, single sign-on Internet access

Vancouver, May , 2010 - BCNET, B.C.'s advanced network for higher education and research, and the Canadian Access Federation lead the way in Canada by providing connectivity for 24 Canadian campuses to join a secure, world-wide roaming access service called eduroam (educational roaming). eduroam was developed for use by the international higher education community and is currently available in Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

The service provides single sign-on, access to campus wireless networks for eduroam enabled students, faculty and staff when visiting any Canadian, European or Asia Pacific higher education campus that are connected to the service. It allows a user to log on to the Internet at a participating campus simply by using their home institution credentials.

Together with the Canadian Access Federation, BCNET and its member institutions are the first in Canada to create eduroam links for wireless reciprocity between higher education institutions. eduroam and other access management services are provided through the Canadian Access Federation, a jointly managed initiative of CANARIE and the Canadian University Council of CIO’s (CUCCIO-CDPIUC).

In 2010, BCNET enabled an additional four Canadian universities with access to eduroam: McMaster University, University of Toronto, Memorial University and Royal Roads University.
