Message from the President

On behalf of BCNET and our Board of Directors, I am proud to present you with a report of our activities from January - June 2010.

We have recently expanded our long-standing mandate beyond the operation and development of B.C.'s advanced network in order to meet our members' future requirements.

The newly extended mission now encompasses cost-effective shared services as well as the operation of the network, which will serve as the platform for the application and services that run on it.

Our governance model is fundamental to our new mandate. As we are owned and run by our members, we have been successful on building a collaborative culture where our members cooperate on non-competitive issues that serve their best interests.

It is through these relationships that our members began to see BCNET not just as a point solution, but a place to collaborate and talk about issues around common services.

Under this new directive, we have undertaken a study to explore the feasibility of a multi-institutional shared green data centre to help our members reduce green house gas emissions, improve efficiencies and decrease operating costs.

We also delivered on our promise to expand, improve and operate the network, facilitate advanced applications, and communicate to our stakeholders.

I encourage you to read our report and learn about the many ways in which BCNET is helping our members to advance technology and innovation for higher education and research.

Michael Hrybyk
